Chronicle of Poorly Planned Mittens
I decided to use some stash and leftover yarn to make a nice big basic pair of mittens that would work for a man. So I gathered 2 balls of Lana Grossa Merino Big (dark blue and lighter blue) and added leftover Mountain Colors Bearfoot "Copper King Plum" from

and turned it into 2 lovely balls of yarn. I liked the combo yarn, but had a sneaking suspicion that there might not be enough...and decided to proceed anyway. |
I played around with needle sizes and found that 5mm were perfect - about 4 stitches/inch and a nice dense fabric. Got out my
Knitter's Handy Book of Patterns by Ann Budd and started my mitts. I made a nice rolled edge followed by 2" of ribbing , a side gusset and was on my way until....I KNEW I was going to run out of yarn and here is where it happened.

I wasn't even close. OK now what to do. Rip them out ~ no, search for pretty contrasting yarn to make stripes ~ nothing looked right, make them fingerless mitts ~ I don't like fingerless mitts because my fingers are always the coldest part . |

Final decision....unravel from the bottom and knit to the top which is just what I did. I used every last inch of yarn.
They are a bit short, but quite serviceable ....Dave claimed them as his own saying he doesn't like long cuffs anyway "they just get in the way"

I have 3 more pairs of mittens just started - "Anatolian Mittens" and "Aran Island Mittens" both from Folk Mittens, and "Troubador Mittens" from Morehouse Farm. I will take some pictures when I am far in enough that you can see something. (are you getting sick of mittens yet?)
